River East, one of the city's first alternative schools, is emerging from a turbulent series of events and is working, with enthusiastic parent support, to stay true to its progressive roots while improving academic performance.

In spring 2005, River East's longtime principal was forced out in a dispute with the regional office. His replacement, Alison McKenzie, a teacher at the school for five years, initially encountered resistance from some teachers and parents as she sought to bring a more traditional structure to the school.
