For many years, PS 39, a tiny elementary school in a red brick building in Park Slope, went largely unnoticed. With many neighborhood parents choosing to send their children to schools outside their zone, PS 39's mix of kids included many children from nearby District 13. But as Park Slope changed and the school's reputation improved, the school has gone from accepting students from outside the zone to becoming "a neighborhood school of choice," school officials say. By 2007, for the first time, all the seats in the Pre-Kindergarten program were filled by children in the school's zone, and parent tours were packed.
