Surrounded by old homes, IS 302 is a neighborhood school that serves a large Hispanic immigrant population and has improved since the arrival of Principal Martin Weinstein in 2003. Test scores, while still low, are rising, and the school was removed from the New York State's list of failing schools in January 2005. In 1999, 71 percent of the school's 8th graders scored a level 1(the lowest level) on state math tests, and by 2004 that number dropped to 19 percent.  |
