Longtime PS 49 Principal Anthony Lombardi inspires strong feelings. United Federation of Teachers President Randi Weingarten has called him a "tyrant" for weeding out teachers who didn't meet his expectations. And Lombardi concedes that in his early years, a "bloodbath" eliminated teachers who did not meet his high expectations or agree with his ideas for the school. But parents and remaining teachers admire what he's done. In fact the PS 49 we saw is a happy place, even if it lacks a gym and is located in a small, overcrowded building where every nook and cranny is occupied.
