PS 76, a small, safe neighborhood school, is sandwiched between St. Nicholas and Adam Clayton Powell boulevards in the heart of a booming Harlem community. Its students come from temporary shelters and homes of modest means, where parents say they are thankful that their children get a good education in the neighborhood school. As one dad shared with us, "My child had the ability to get into talented and gifted programs in the district but there was never any space for her, so she ended up graduating from here. That was fine because she graduated salutatorian and now is in honors at Delta. So we have just kept her sister right here."
