Located in a middle class neighborhood, JHS 185 is an immaculately clean and safe school that's somewhat smaller than others in the district. It's an orderly place where kids get to class on time, seem attentive and engaged in their work, and have an unusual amount of interaction with their teachers. "We're very small and that lends itself to a personalized approach," said principal Valerie Sawinski. "I know the children by name." The school has a traditional tone: A dress code is enforced.
