Promotion and graduation

Teacher observations and assessments and student class work are used as promotion criteria for kindergarten - 2nd grade. From 3rd-8th grade, student performances on state standardized tests helps determin promotion. In high school, promotion is decided by credit accumulation and performance on the subject-based Regents exams.

If a student is having a tough time with schoolwork, free tutoring services and programs are available. For high school students who are failing in school, or even those who have dropped out, there are many programs and special schools to help them receive their high school diploma. There are also programs for 7th and 8th graders who have failed repeatedly.
