Editorial Intern

Insideschools.org is seeking an editorial intern for the winter/spring semester. You will work directly with our editorial staff to update content on the website, create school reviews, news blogs, bi-monthly newsletters, and social media content. Our goal is to provide practical tools to navigate the city's school system as well as a platform for communication among parents, educators, students, and other advocates for public education.

Insideschools.org is a project of Advocates for Children of New York. For over 37 years, AFC has worked on behalf of children and youth who are at greatest risk of academic failure due to poverty, race, ethnicity, disability, homelessness, immigration status/limited English proficiency, or involvement in the child welfare or juvenile justice system.

The position is unpaid but course credit is available. We are seeking individuals who are willing to work 10-15 hours each week at our Manhattan offices. Knowledge of, and a passion for, journalistic writing, education, and web development are a major plus. Freelance Web Developer

Insideschools.org the leading independent, non-profit website about NYC public schools seeks a responsible, detail-oriented, and innovative web developer with an intuitive understanding of user experience and graphic design. You will work closely with the project director to trouble-shoot, import new data to the site, and help develop and integrate new site features.

The freelance Web Developer should be prepared to take on the following key responsibilities:

  • Perform daily maintenance of Insideschools.org website, proprietary CMS, WordPress blog, and Simple Machines forum
  • Migrate incoming data from DOE (in varying formats) into existing MySQL database
  • Modify existing code to add and improve functionality (PHP, HTML, CSS)
  • Ability to create cross-browser and cross-platform compliant web pages
  • Establish and maintain social networking accounts like Facebook and Twitter
  • Assist in maintaining and securing web servers (i.e., resolve issues with site slowdowns during traffic spikes)
  • Design and implement SEO strategies (build XML sitemaps, edit meta tags)
  • Provide technical documentation to staff when necessary
  • Provide XML data to content partners from database as needed
  • Assist with delivery of bi-monthly e-mail newsletter in iContact

Requirements:

  • LAMP environment experience
  • HTML/CSS/Javascript coding expert
  • Ability to write SQL queries for MySQL database
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Ability to write documentation
  • Communicate well with users and non-techies

  • iContact, QuestionPro
  • Google Analytics, Google Ad Manager, Hootsuite
  • Virtual Private Server, Plesk
