Our Insights
Academy of Collaborative Education is closed after years of poor performance. In 2010-11, the school only served 53 sixth and seventh grade students. Those students went to other District 5 middle schools in fall 2011.
Since opening in 2006, the school never met its goal of preparing students to succeed in fields in which racial/ethnic minorities are currently underrepresented. In 2010, only 3 percent of students were on grade level in English language arts (ELA), and only 9 percent were on grade level in math. Community members expressed concerns about a lack of intervention services for troubled students and serious safety problems at the school. In February 2011 the Panel for Education Policy approved the DOE’s proposal to close the school due to persistently low performance and an inability to be transformed.
