What’s Special

Students learn both Spanish and English

The Downside

Low test scores and graduation rates

Esperanza Preparatory Academy, which serves grades 6 to 12, aims to make students fluent readers, writers and speakers in both English and Spanish while encouraging them to take pride in their culture. However, the school has a poor record of academic achievement. Both students and teachers complain of problems with order and discipline. Attendance is well below the citywide average. Parents complain of rapid staff turnover.

Esperanza Prep, founded in 2008, shares the Tito Puente Educational Complex in East Harlem with the Talented and Gifted School. Esperanza has its own library and shares a cafeteria, gym, and auditorium with TAG. (Clara Hemphill, web reports, December 2018)
