Our review
East Fordham Academy for the Arts plans to engage students through hands-on projects where art is infused throughout all lessons. Opening in September 2009 with 120 6th-graders, the school is one of two schools set to replace the failing MS 399, which is closing due to poor performance. The school will eventually serve about 350 students in grades 6-8.
"The school is really founded on the principle that arts are the foundation for academic and social success," said Principal Tanicia Williams, in a telephone interview. Students will study visual arts, music, dance, and theatre in 6-week cycles. Arts will be infused into all subject areas. In an activity called "Reader's Theatre," students will write short skits in their English classes. Students will also produce a portfolio of their work, which will travel with them throughout middle school.
Students will have advisory four times per week, and one day per week, the entire school will meet for a "community circle." The school's student council will lead the community meetings, which will focus on student concerns. Parents will be invited to a monthly breakfast with the principal.
After school: Students will participate in tutoring, art, dance, and drama, Monday - Friday until 6 p.m.
Admissions: Students zoned for PS 33, PS 79, and PS 91 can choose between Creston Academy and East Fordham Academy for the Arts. (Vanessa Witenko, March 2009, telephone interview)
