Cohesive, high performing school
Building is too small
PS 112 in Bensonhurst was one of three schools featured in the 2005 documentary Mad Hot Ballroom. The filmfeaturing 5th-graders who tango and rhumba in classes led by instrutors from the American Ballroom Theater dance programcaptures the lively spirit of this diverse, medium-sized school in an Italian and Asian neighborhood.
Among its many positive qualities, the school boasts longtime leadership, good attendance, an array of arts choices and solid test scores even among the special needs population.
One downside is rising enrollment in an already packed building. Some classes are held in a trailer outside the school, and the auditorium has been modified into a multipurpose room of sorts with removable chairs. Two corners of the room have been cut away by large curtains and designated for music and art classes.
On school surveys, however, most teachers report safety and order are maintained, and they overwhelmingly support the work of longtime principal Louise Verdemare.
Children in the upper grades receive dance lessons, while others are involved in music, theater and visual arts. Other programs include Cook Shop, a federally funded nutrition education program, robotics and bully prevention.
