What’s Special

Classes in robotics and computing; enrichment activites support through partnerships

The Downside

Attendance needs to improve

Modeled on the originaI Frederick Douglass Academy, FDA II is dedicated to preparing children from low-income neighborhoods for higher education. However, the school faces challenges. Principal Osei Owusu-Afriyie, who took the helm in 2010, has struggled to boost achievement.

On the positive side, FDA II offers electives in robotics and critical computing. Eighth-graders are offered high school level courses in Living Environment and algebra. Visiting artists from Lincoln Center offer lessons in visual arts. Additional activities are supported through partnerships with iMentor, Achievment Initiative, Double Discovery through Columbia University, StreetSquash, Broadway Junioe, Teen Battle Chef and Girls on the Run.

Some challenges persist. Attendance needs to improve and enrollment has declined, with under 350 students in grades 6 to 12. FDA II shares a building with Wadleigh Secondary School and a charter school, Success Academy Harlem West. (Clara Hemphill, web reports, December 2018; updated February 2021)
