What’s Special

Internship Program; only English Regents exam required to graduate

The Downside

Poor attendance

At Bronx Lab School, students must complete portfolios in major subjects and defend their work in oral presentations in order to graduate. The school is part of the New York Performance Standards Consortium, a group of schools exempt from most Regents exams. Students complete oral and written projects called performance based assessments tasks or PBATs. English is the only Regents exam required.

The school offers a four-year internship program in which students earn credit towards graduation through experiential learning. In their senior spring semester, students in the program have full-time internships. In the past, students have interned at a wide range of companies and organizations like American Civil Liberties Union, Prospect Park Zoo, Montefiore Hospital and NBC.

The school has a low attendance rate, and many students are absent for more than three weeks of the school year. The school also has a high suspension rate, well above the citywide average.

On the positive side, the school’s college office gives students individual attention to help them apply for college and scholarships. Although the graduation rate is below the citywide average, most of those who do graduate are well prepared for college and stay enrolled in college for at least three semesters, according to DOE data.

Students may take part in the many sports teams on the Evander Childs campus, and share facilities like the library, gym and cafeteria with other schools in the building. (Melanie Quiroz, web reports and DOE data, November 2018)
