Our Insights

Walton High School closed in June 2008. For your transcript or proof of graduation, call the International School for Liberal Arts at 718-329-8570.

The school was known for its high level of violence and low graduation rates. Students often took seven years to graduate. The building's library was closed for years and the pool was not in use. Though the level of violence in the building has decreased, students must still pass through metal detectors to enter; they say it usually goes smoothly though.Walton had a great baseball team, which is now comprised of students from each of the small schools that occupy the building.

Discovery High School does a good job of taking students who have not done well in middle school and making sure they graduate on time. Students seem to have an unusually warm relationship with their teachers and principal. Though the school calls itself an arts-integrated high school, the arts and music offerings are mostly limited to after-school classes. The school also has a strong guidance program.

Celia Cruz Bronx High School of Music offers students great opportunities to perform at places such as Lincoln Center and Carnegie Hall. Students take many of their music classes at nearby Lehman College. The school has a very high graduation rate.

The International School for Liberal Arts gives Spanish-speaking children a gentle transition to English. Students begin with classes that are mostly in Spanish and more English is offered each month; the goal is for the children to be fluent in English as soon as possible. However, in the middle school, very few stduents meet state standards in reading or math.

Kingsbridge International High School teaches students that are new to this country. The some students are graduating with the more demanding Advanced Regents diploma, the the school's overall graduation rate is well below the city-wide averate.

The High School for Teaching and the Professions opened in 2002 as an outgrowth of a pre-teaching program at Walton. However, despite the school's name, there is now no formal programming about the teaching profession at the school, although many of its extracurricular internship programs relate to teaching. It has struggled with poor attendance and low levels of student achievement.(Aryn Bloodworth, November 2012; updated July, 2018)
