The Downside

Low attendance, some safety issues outside the building

Morris Academy for Collaborative Studies is a safe, well-run school in the Morris Educational Campus. Teachers encourage teens to explore their interests in class and take them on trips to expand their horizons. It is a project-based school; each year students must complete research projects in every subject and present them to teachers and other judges.

Projects are displayed at an event called the “roundtable,” set up in the cafeteria like a science fair. Some past student project titles include "The Importance of Iron" and "Wild African Elephants." Roundtables are “a huge part of our school culture,” said a student in a video on the school’s informative website. One teen said it gives students lots of practice in public speaking and working together—skills they will need in college.

The school has a reputation for its friendly atmosphere. Students are paired with an adult mentor in school. Clubs help promote a positive tone with themes like chess, movies and a coloring club to reduce stress. Students from the different countries bond in the international club. One teacher runs a Japanese club during lunchtime, showing Anime movies and other aspects of Japanese culture.

Morris has long had a partnership with Hope for New York, in which select students are paired with mentors from a variety of professions. These mentors develop long-term relationships to support students and help them make good choices, according to the Hope for New York website.

Principal Matthew Mazzoroppi took the helm in 2013. He is a graduate of Lehman College and taught 10th grade English language arts at Marie Curie, a high school in the Bronx.

Morris Academy shares a historic high-ceilinged building with Bronx International, High School for Violin and Dance and School for Excellence. The four schools share the cafeteria, gymnasiums and an auditorium with a balcony and a pipe organ. Sports teams are campus-wide. The schools share the on-site Montefiore Health Clinic, complete with exam rooms, dental and counseling services. However, children must pass through a metal detector in the morning.
