Claremont International High School is a safe, supportive school that serves students who have been in the country for four years or less who are learning to speak, read and write in English. It opened in 2012 in partnership with International Network for Public Schools, an organization with long experience successfully preparing new immigrants for college, including those who have had little schooling in their home country.

Academics & Instruction: Because students arrive at the school with different educational backgrounds and varying degrees of English fluency, classes mix age groups (the average age for incoming 9th-graders is 16.7 years). Teens work together in groups at tables where they often collaborate on projects and translate for one another.

In 11th grade, students have three-month internships at businesses and community organizations to acquaint them with the world of work and to help them develop their English skills in a non-school setting. Internships have included work at the Bronx Borough of Tourism, St. Barnabas Hospital and an animal rescue organization.

Some students would like more challenge; less than half said teachers ask difficult questions in class, according to the NYC School Survey. Students may take college-level classes with Hostos Community College. Courses have included anatomy and physiology, acting, and public speaking. Despite challenges students face, the school has had success stories. For an example, a newly arrived student from Honduras with interrupted formal education went on to earn an award from the National Honor Society, which recognizes outstanding high school students and gives out scholarships. In addition to arts and theater classes, the school has clubs for coding, crochet, dance, guitar and more. 

Culture & Environment: Teachers are experienced and they value the life experiences of their students, said principal Elizabeth Demchak, who is trusted by staff, according to the NYC School Survey. The tone is safe and supportive. Students may join culture clubs for African, Arabic, Bangla and Latino students. All teens take part in restorative justice circles, where they get support as they talk through conflict.

Building & Facilities: The school is housed in the William H. Taft Educational Campus, which it shares with several small high schools. Students from all schools may participate in campus-wide PSAL sports teams.

College & Career: The community organization, New Settlement, helps students apply to college and secure financial aid. (Lydie Raschka, web reports and interview, August 2023)
