What’s Special

Stable leadership and supportive environment

The Downside

Below average test scores

A small middle school in Bedford-Stuyvesant, MS 35 has a safe and supportive environment where teachers treat students with respect and help them catch up when they fall behind, according to school surveys.

Both parents and teachers say Jacklyn Charles-Marcus, principal since 2004, is an effective manager who makes the school run smoothly, according to school surveys.

Unfortunately, the good tone of the school hasn’t translated into high academic achievement. Attendance is below average for the city. Many students enter with weak academic skills and test scores are low.  The school is part of the Middle School Quality Initiative, a program designed to improve reading skills.

Free after school and summer programs are offered by SCO Services, a non-profit organization.

The building is shared with the Brooklyn Brownstone Elementary School.

Admissions: District 16 choice. (Clara Hemphill, web reports, April 2019)
