What’s Special

Teaching & computer classes; bilingual team-taught special ed class

The Downside

Many kids miss more than 18 days of school

At the High School for Teaching & the Professions, called T&P for short, students who aspire to be teachers get a chance to prepare lesson plans and even teach their peers. Students who want to pursue business may choose a three-year Cisco A+ Networking program in which they learn how to build a computer, set it up and connect it to a network.

Housed in the Walton Educational Campus, T&P is as cheery as the bright yellow walls. Graduation rates are up and suspensions are down since Roberto Hernandez became principal in 2014.

A Bronx native and former quarterback, Hernandez organized campus-wide PSAL sports and arranged a catered awards dinner for families. There is a pool in the building where kids may earn a lifeguard certificate. Girls may join the swim team.

Hernandez believes in giving kids second chances to do better. Kids are encouraged to re-do assignments and re-take tests and to attend Saturday Academy. “It is the culture at the school that you have to do all your work or stay after school,” he said.

Students arrive by 8:20 a.m. and may leave by 2:35 p.m. if their work is done. If not, they must visit the afterschool program, which runs until 4:30 p.m. Some children also stay for sports and arts.

A group of smart, confident older teens help set the tone as they mentor younger ones in the Peer Group Connection (PGC) program. If there is a serious problem, the dean and Hernandez respond very quickly. “They don’t let it go to the next step, which is fighting,” a 12th grade PGC mentor said.

Ninth graders get support in small classes. Teachers help kids stay organized, show them how to take good notes, and take them on college visits.  The Girl Talk club provides additional support for girls, who make up the majority of the school’s population.

The school has a growing number of Advanced Placement classes, as well as college classes with Lehman, next door, and Monroe. Some children get paid jobs in school such as working with an administrator or tutoring students.

A downside: many teens miss more than 18 days of school. This happens mostly among children who transfer into the school in grades 10 and up, the principal said. Strategies to improve include home visits, phone calls and helping older teens find transfer schools to give them more options for making up credits.

Founded in 2002, T&P shares the building with Discovery, Kingsbridge International, Celia Cruz High School for Music and International School for Liberal Arts.

SPECIAL EDUCATION: T&P is the only high school in the Bronx that offers a team-teaching bilingual special education class, the principal said. It also has team-teaching classes. “I think I have some of the best special ed teachers,” he said.
