Our Insights

New Design Middle School opened in 2011 with the idea that studying design helps students develop strong academic, social and emotional skills. It is based on the same principles as its sister school, New Design High School on the Lower East Side. Students use sculpture, painting, drawing and recycled materials to make art projects.

Children have fun field trips to places like the Apple Store to learn about computers. One year, they went snow-tubing on a snow covered hill as part of a unit on the weather. Volunteers from Goldman Sachs taught them about bank accounts, credit cards and the stock market.

The school replaces IS 195, which was closed for poor performance. It shares a building with KIPP Infinity Charter elementary and middle schools.

Admissions: District 5 choice.
