The Downside

Poor attendance and low test scores

Hunts Point Middle School, also called The Bronx Academy for Multi-Media, has long struggled with poor attendance and low levels of academic achievement. A popular principal, David Vazquez, the fourth school leader in eight years, and his staff are working hard to turn things around.

Teachers and parents say Vazquez, who arrived in 2017, is an effective leader who has built an atmosphere of trust, according to school surveys. The school has a hands-on science curriculum in which students build model boats, study the environment, and learn to sail real boats with a non-profit community organization called Rocking the Boat.

At the close of the 2016-2017 academic year, Hunts Point Middle School was one of the lowest performing middle schools in New York State and on the persistently dangerous list, according to the Comprehensive Educational Plan. It was renamed the Brooklyn Academy for Multi-Media (BAMM) and a schoolwide improvement plan was drafted and initiated four weeks later in September 2017.

It was the fourth name change for the school in the past 20 years. Under the name PS/IS 74, Hunts Point lingered for many years on the state's list of failing schools. In 2000 it was reorganized into MS 201, a magnet school focused on the arts, but landed again on the city’s failing list four years in a row. In 2008 half the teaching staff was let go and the school reopened as Hunts Point.
