Our Insights

What’s Special

Safe environment and demanding coursework

The Downside

High suspension rate

Housed in a stately building in East Harlem overlooking the East River, Isaac Newton Middle School has a safe environment and a demanding curriculum.

While some students enter with weak academic skills, all are required to take Regents (high school level) exams in algebra, Living Environment and global history, according to the school’s yearly plan.

Teachers say the school is orderly and disciplined, according to school surveys, but the suspension rate is high. The school is working to decrease the number of suspensions, according to the yearly plan.

Many students live in nearby public housing developments. The neighborhood has seen new immigrants from Mexico, Asia, Africa, and South America in recent years, according to the yearly plan.

The middle school shares the building with Manhattan Center for Science and Mathematics High School which many Isaac Newton graduates attend.

Admissions: District 4 choice. The school admits students according to their 4th grade test scores, grades, and attendance. (Clara Hemphill, web reports, May 2019)
