I.S. 068 Isaac Bildersee

IS 68 in Canarsie describes itself as an “eco-friendly” school that “promotes a cleaner, sustainable environment.” A small neighborhood school, IS 68 has a dual language program in Haitian Creole and English that is open to students from across Brooklyn.

The school serves many students from the West Indies, primarily Haiti, as well as a growing population of students from the Middle East.

Students plant oysters in New York Harbor as part of the Billion Oyster Project. In front of the school, they plant flowers and vegetables in a “pollinator garden” and learn how plants are pollinated.

A Department of Education evaluation called the Quality Review said instruction is lively and teachers work together as a team. However, some students complain of bullying and don’t feel safe outside the school or in bathrooms, according to school surveys.
