Serves new immigrants

The Downside

Limited course options

Crotona International High School, founded in 2011 with the help of the International Network for Public Schools, serves recent immigrants to the United States. The school focuses on teaching English while also preserving the students' home languages. The school also offers a Career and Technical Education (CTE) program with a digital and media arts theme.

Academics & Instruction: Students at the school come with a wide range of educational backgrounds and English proficiency levels, so classes mix age groups. Teens sit in groups at tables where they often work together on projects and translate for one another.

In 11th grade, students have three-month internships at businesses and community organizations to acquaint them with the world of work and to help them develop their English skills in a non-school setting. Internships have included work at the Glass Files, a website that collects family histories online, and BronxNet TV.

Students take field trips to places like the Bronx Zoo, the Apple Store, the Museum of Moving Images and a Broadway show. They have gone ice skating and visited New York City parks. Clubs include chorus, dance, music, technical education and a girls’ group.

Students are invited to attend Saturday school and after school English courses to supplement their learning.

Culture & Environment: Students meet once a week for their advisory course, where they discuss topics of their choice. They each have a trusted teacher as a mentor and meet for a mentoring class twice a week where they work on academics and enjoy fun activities such as trivia games.

Themes & programs: The school offers a Career and Technical Education (CTE) program with a digital and media arts theme. Each grade has a different focus. Ninth- and  10th-graders study basic computer programs; 11th-graders create original music, poetry and videos; 12th-graders build a digital portfolio of their work.

Building & Facilities: The school has a renovated lunchroom, podcast recording technology and computer lab. Crotona shares the Grace Dodge Educational Campus with two other schools. Students from all schools may participate in campus-wide PSAL sports.

College & Career: Students have a work-based learning seminar once a week beginning in 9th grade. In this class, they explore and research careers that interest them and create action plans. In 12th grade, students take a college seminar course where they solidify their plans for college and apply with support from their college counselor.
