The Downside

Below average test scores

At New Heights Middle School, also called MS 722, technology is integrated into the daily life of the school. Students have access to MacBooks, Chromebooks, and iPads and collaborate on projects using Google applications.

Students, referred to as scholars, are encouraged to take personal responsibility for their academic performance through self-evaluation. Parent-teacher conferences are led by the students, who write letters inviting parents and guardians to attend and then lead the discussion about their work, according to the school website.

Extra-curricular activities include programs at the BAM Shakespeare residency, the Bronx Zoo, Brooklyn Botanical Gardens, NY Historical Society Enrichment Program, and Lincoln Center, according to the school’s Comprehensive Educational Plan. After school activities include a basketball mentoring program, Art Club, Step Team, Robotics Club, Journalism Club and musical theater.

While test scores at the school have improved over the years, they are still below the citywide average, according to the School Quality Guide.

Families are encouraged to visit classrooms and to attend parent workshops and breakfasts.

New Heights, opened in 2012, shares a building with Achievement First Crown Heights Charter School. New Heights replaces the Middle School for the Arts which closed in 2014 after years of poor performance.

Admissions: Zoned students and District 17 applicants who attend an information session, open house or fair. (Melanie Quiroz, web reports and DOE data, May 2019).
