Modeled after a diverse charter school in Los Angeles

The Downside

New school has growing pains

Citizens of the World Charter School 2 is modeled after two schools of the same name in Los Angeles. They are based on the vision of Mark Gordon, a film and movie producer, who wanted to build racially diverse schools where low- and upper-income kids could learn together.

The Crown Heights school, founded in 2013 with the help of Eric Grannis, a lawyer who is married to Success Academy Charter Schools founder Eva Moskowitz, is a work in progress. In its first years, it struggled with order and discipline, high suspension rates, and low academic achievement. Principal Andrea Dozier took the helm in 2016, the third principal in five years. Dozier was a Ryan Fellow, a program based at Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Managment that trains promising teachers to lead urban schools.

Director of Operations Ashley Crawford said she is hopeful the school is on the upswing under Dozier's leadership. She said attendance had improved, there is more coaching for teachers in reading and math and the school offers “more family workshops on a regular basis.”  One parent, posting a comment on the InsideSchools website, said the new principal "is professional and really does listen and consider what we are saying."

The Neighborhood Improvement Association hosts the after school program, where students can participate in free classes such as yoga and drama, or get homework help.

The school shares a building with PS 221.

ADMISSIONS: Lottery with preference to siblings and District 17 residents. (Lydie Raschka, phone interview and school data, November 2017)
