What’s Special

A fast track to graduation for older students

The Downside

Attendance is a constant challenge

Brooklyn Bridge Academy, housed in the South Shore Educational Campus, offers a fresh start for older students who are at risk of dropping out.

The school operates on a trimester schedule, which allows students to accumulate credits faster than they would on a traditional schedule of two semesters a year. While a student in a regular high school accumulates 11 credits a year, students at Brooklyn Bridge may accumulate more than twice that many.

The school, affiliated with New Visions for Public Schools and the non-profit community organization CAMBA, offers a supportive environment, career counseling and paid internships. Students say they feel safe. However, attendance is a constant challenge, as it is for most transfer schools. (Clara Hemphill, web reports, August 2018)
