What’s Special

Partnership with Plaza College and internships through St. John’s Hospital

The Downside

Many graduates must take remedial classes in college

The Academy of Medical Technology (AMT) is a combined middle and high school that focuses on preparing students for careers in the health field.

The school has worked to ramp up its academic offerings in recent years, adding Advanced Placement courses and requiring that all 8th-graders take high school level courses in in algebra, Living Environment, and United States history.

Students may participate in competitions sponsored by HOSA (Health Occupations Students of America) a national organization dedicated to preparing the next generation of medical professionals.

High school students who participate in AMT’s Medical Scholar program take advanced coursework in partnership with Plaza College and participate in internships at St. John’s Hospital.

Many students come in below grade level, and test scores, particularly in math, in middle school are low. Most students graduate on time, though many must take remedial courses in college to catch up.

Overall, students feel safe in the school though some would like to see more support and attention from their teachers, based on their responses to the NYC School Survey.

AMT shares the Far Rockaway campus with two high schools, Frederick Douglass Academy VI, and the Queens High School for Information Research and Technology, and a middle school, Knowledge and Power Preparatory Academy VI. Sports teams, including co-ed double Dutch, are building-wide. There is an onsite medical clinic that serves students and their families. The campus has metal detectors.

SPECIAL EDUCATION: The school offers ICT (integrated co-teaching) classes. The school has substantial numbers of English language learners but only a small percentage of them graduate on time.
