What’s Special

Strong community support; programs for English language learners

The Downside

Poor graduation rate and attendance

Students at the High School for Health Careers and Sciences, one of the small schools on the George Washington Educational Campus, may go on camping trips, learn to skate or travel to Washington D.C. as part of a partnership with Catholic Charities. They may get glasses and counseling services along with medical care and help with immigration problems.

Graduation and attendance rates are low, and there is a tense relationship between the principal and the staff, according to school surveys. But when the city proposed closing the school for poor performance in 2018, students, parents and elected officials rallied at City Hall to keep it open. The city agreed to give the school more time to improve.

There are unusual classes like anatomy, physiology, robotics and hydroponics/aquaponics. Students may gain experience in health professions by interning at the Isabella Geriatric Center.

Students may participate in fitness club and world cultures cooking club. The school has a large number of new Spanish-speaking immigrants

SPECIAL EDUCATION: The school offers integrated co-teaching (ICT) classes, in which a general education and special education teacher work together. (Isabel Corpus, web reports, June 2018)
