Courses in building maintenance and operations

The Downside

Attendance could be better

If you like taking things apart and putting them back together, and learning how a building works, the High School for Energy and Technology might be the school for you.

In addition to regular high school classes, students study basic electricity, complex circuitry, conductors, wiring, motor controls and more, according to the high school directory.  This prepares them for jobs working with heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, to help maintain and operate today’s complicated building systems.

Several businesses provide teens with workplace experience: Con Edison, Construction Skills, Inc, and The Department of Citywide Administrative Services, which implements energy conservation programs throughout New York City.

Students are expected to earn a CTE-endorsed Regents diploma, which has more requirements than a regular Regents diploma. CTE (career and technical education) schools are designed to prepare students for work, whether or not they choose to go to college.

Attendance is below the citywide average; almost half the students miss a month or more of school.

Energy and Tech opened in fall 2012 in the Grace Dodge Educational Campus. It shares the building and common spaces with two other schools. (Lydie Raschka, web reports and DOE data, November 2018)
