The Downside

Academic achievement has a ways to go

Mott Hall Charter School, opened in 2012, is modeled after the original Mott Hall middle school in Harlem. However, unlike the original Mott Hall, the new charter school has no admissions requirements and students are admitted by lottery.

The student body is made up of children of Dominican, Central American, African American, and West African descent, according to the school website. Enrichment programs include dance classes in hip hop, modern and jazz as well as video and music production.

The school has applied to be part of the International Baccalaureate, a degree recognized in 100 countries. The school’s test scores are below average.

Mott Hall Charter School is located in the annex building of PS 63 in a space once occupied by MS 2, which was closed for poor performance.

Admissions: Lottery with preference to District 9. (Clara Hemphill, school website, March 2019)
