Hi Anonymous,
I was up watching a boiling pot; My kid had a high fever in the middle of the night(re:why posting at 2:29am?....yeesh).
Also, I'm one of those folks whom left this site up on their desktop over the weekend, waiting to hear if any 1st or K g&t applicants out of my district(6) had received citywide notifications.
I've already committed to a great private, with a generous financial aid offer but would surely pay them and take the seat at our only chosen citywide.
In simple terms: I'm just another currently cuckoo
parent, hoping there is an end in sight.
I look forward to any book turn-ons from this blog
and will check back soon.

Some of our NYC set, family favorites include:
ALL of the Lyle books by Bernard Waber
Abuela by Arthur Dorros
Tar Beach by Faith Ringold
My Taxi Ride &
My Subway Ride both by Paul Dubois Jacobs
Poodlena by E.B. McHenry
From the Mixed-up files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler
by E.L. Konigsberg
Some we like to believe are set in NYC are:
The Little House by Virginia Lee Burton
Norman the Doorman by Don Freeman
Art Dog by Thatcher Hurd
Outside NYC books that get lots of play include
Pippi Longstocking by Astrid Lundgren
Alice for the Very Young by Lewis Carroll
A Wrinkle in Time by Madeline L'Engle
My Father's Dragon
Lionel and the Book of Beasts
The Giraffe, The Pelly & Me by Roald Dahl
and ANYTHING by
Louis Slobodkin
Eleanor Estes
William Pene duBois
Edward Gorey
Shel Siverstein and
C.S.Lewis
My 5 yr. old has been planning to open a bookstore(for 3 yrs. now!) in her future and has worked out a tremendous concept for booksharing/swapping/recycling/reviewing. When we made this list earlier, she asked that I not separate or categorize titles according to age, picture, chapter or anything-outside the 'nyc or not' distinction. She said "every book is great for somebody and that some books are great for almost everybody". We'll keep checking this blog for more titles. Thanks.

Both of my kids (an 11-year-old and an 8-year-old) currently love "Diary of A Wimpy Kid" and its sequel, "Rodrick Rules." My daughter also recently read the classic "The Phantom Tollbooth," one of my own favorite books from childhood.
