You people are so obsessed with the hip nabes and you just are blind to the many good schools in Districts 22 and 21. You will live about 10-15 or more away via train from Manhattan, but you can get a better rent, some very nice schools, and less BS attitude.<br/>Park Slope is so overdone, Windsor Terrace is vastly overrated and W-burg, pleez. SO come on down to 22 and 21 and even 20 country for better living!

Williamsburg, Brooklyn is a growing area and PS 132 over there is a good school. The rents are a little lower than $3000 a month as well.

When we moved to the 321 school district we calculated that the difference in housing costs between comparable apartments in our former zone and 321's zone was almost exactly equal to the cost of eight years' private school tuition for one child.

You could suggest that your friend look into Forest Hills, Queens, in the zoned for areas of any of the following top rated schools: PS 196, PS 101, or PS 144. These are all within walking distance to the 71st and Continental subway stop (E/F express & G & R locals) or the Union Turnpike E/F stop. PS 101and PS 144 are also very near the Forest Hills LIRR station (15 minutes to midtown, followed by 15 minutes on the 1, 2, or 3 to Financial District or Tribeca); PS 196 is a longer walk to the FH LIRR, but it's not bad - maybe 15 minutes. PS 99 in Kew Gardens is also excellent, and is near the Kew Gardens LIRR stop and the Union Turnpike subway stop. Both Forest Hills and Kew Gardens have far more affordable family-oriented rentals than Manhattan. And there are nice restaurants, movie theatres, fine food shops, boutiques, etc. on Austin Street and Metropolitan, the two main local shopping districts.
