New student registration
![]() |
Although the first day of school is just two weeks away, some students, especially those new to the city, still don’t know where they will be going to school on Sept. 9.
Beginning next Monday, Aug. 31, the Department of Education will open special enrollment centers for high school students who are new to New York City, new to public school, or who otherwise don’t have a high school placement. The center will be open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday to Friday from Aug. 31- Sept. 18 (closed on Labor Day).
There are registration sites in every borough, all of them located in school buildings. In the Bronx, you may register at Theodore Roosevelt or PS/IS 194; in Brooklyn at the Brooklyn High School of the Arts, Clara Barton High School, IS 223, or Brooklyn Tech; in Manhattan at the American Sign Language school, the George Washington complext, or the Joan of Arc building; in Queens, go to Thomas Edison or Long Island City high schools; and in Staten Island the registration center is at Petrides.
Elementary and middle school centers should register at their zoned school, beginning on the first day of classes, Sept. 9. Those students who don’t have a zoned school — and many districts through New York do not have zoned middle schools - should go to one of the enrollment centers. Elementary and middle school students with special needs who attend a charter or private school should go to a Committee on Special Education location to register.
Make sure you have the proper documents to register — check the DOE’s website for what you need to bring — and don’t forget to bring your child! Heaven forbid an office would be open earlier than 8 am and later than 3 pm to accommodate parents and caregivers who actually still have jobs and are working…
Once again, the NYC DOE really is out of touch with the very parents they claim they want to engage and involve.

If the child is registered on September 9, will he be able to attend classes on September 9? Or it will be another lost day? I all teachers are back on August 31, how come that the child cannot register until September 9?

I am reading some of these comments and I cant believe them. It is so important for parents to be proactive in their childrens education and not reactive. If you wait for the last minute to enroll or register your children these are some of the unfortunate circumstances you will have to endure ( which were mentioned in preveious comments). Stop trying to blame everyone else for your lack of responsibilty in making sure your children were already placed in a school before the summer break. Yes, well all have to work and sometimes it may require us to take time off so we can tend to our children and their educatioal needs.
