Clean and Green: Only green cleaning products allowed
![]() |
Principals throughout the city were reminded last week, in a letter from Chancellor Klein, that only “environmentally sensitive cleaning and maintenance products” may be used in public schools. Since 2005, New York State has mandated that schools use green cleaning supplies that create healthier environments for children.
The Principal’s Weekly newsletter noted that principals and parents often purchase cleaning supplies for the classroom. “Please be sure your teachers are aware that state law requires them to use only Green Seal Certified or Eco Logo approved surface cleaners and hand cleaners,” it said.
Let us know what’s happening at your school? Does your teacher’s wish list of needed supplies specify “green” products?

No, supply lists did not specify this. But, honestly, I have greater concerns when it comes to my children’s education and I would never hassle their teachers about something like this. Even when it comes to environmentalism in the schools, I’d much rather see the school start recycling (the amount of paper discarded is staggering!) than focus on this.

We were supposed to bring in clorox wipes. I have no idea if this is a product that meets state requirements. However, I am very glad that the teacher will be wiping down the classroom and don’t care if it is environmentally sensitive or not. Just as long as it kills flu germs.

I agree that we should not only be using green cleaning products but ones that are non-toxic. The toxins in the conventional cleaning products have been shown to contribute to lack of focus and concentration on behalf of children especially those with ADD/ADHD, Autism, Asthma, Allergies, etc… Refer to http://www.shaklee.net/total-wellness Toxins should also be eliminated in the home where most children sleep and eat at. Switch today from conventional brands to non-toxic concentrated green cleaners!

Yes, our supply list from the teacher at PS87 indicated green cleaning products and sanitizers.
