Poll: How did your parent-teacher conference go?
![]() |
In our last poll, we asked how you felt about the future of our public schools in the wake of Mayor Bloomberg’s reelection. It turns out that many of you – 32% — are angry: you feel our kids were pawns in a costly campaign and wish the money had gone to schools instead.
Fifteen percent have confidence that the mayor has done a lot to make the schools better and that he can keep up the momentum. Fifteen percent are determined to get our kids the best education possible regardless of who’s in charge, and 18% are worried things will get worse. Only 10% said they were optimistic that the schools will improve, and just 7% were disappointed that Thompson didn’t win.
This week, we’d like to know how your parent-teacher conferences went. Vote now! You’ll find this week’s poll near the upper left hand side of this page, and you can share your comments here.

another joke, overcrowded middle school was like walmart on black friday with surging crowd of parents (and this was the afternoon session!) of course was not able to even meet all the teachers because of crowd, no welcome except from hard working parent coordinator, when asked math teacher what strategies she might employ or that we could use to help our child do better she shrugged her shoulders and said ‘not really any accept keep pushing” sad and frustrating

I’m not sure that one can get to the bottom of anything in the three minutes that were allotted for the P/t conferences. Although the school took good measures to ensure that the conf were only 3 minutes long, a lot of parents still didn’t get in to see their teachers, or were subject to long wait times. While we were encouraged to only see the teacher if our children were doing 80 and below, I think that misses the point of the conferences (for parents that is) which is to check in, see what the kids are doing right/wrong and obtain action items that will ensure better performance.

Re the previous poll: in doing high school tours, I am getting the impression that the upcoming budget cuts will be cutting to the bone. There’s no more fat to trim, and some of the meat is already gone. I don’t know how cuts can be avoided with tue current fiscal situation, but it’s getting scary out there.

I have to say that at my middle school (Scholars Academy) although it was the usual 3 minutes, they made a real effort to see each and every parent and to be sufficiently prepared to be able to say something meaningful. Yes, it was too short, but at the very least each teacher had my son’t marks at hand, knew how he was doing, and was prepared with what needed improvement and what was fine.

Waiting two hours to spend 5 minutes with my child’s teachers is not what I consider acceptable…As we only get to meet with them twice a year you’d think they’d figure out a way to give us a little more time to get something meaningful out of the conferences. Since my child gets good grades and the teachers don’t have much to say I’m actually tempted to skip the conference next time for the first time ever.

Our children’s teacher made sexist remarks about our child and lack of popular friends. Quite a bummer. Sad insight in to what we can only imagine must be a frustrating classroom environment for all.

The line was huge though I have to say hearing the good news about my son really made my day.My family comes first than my job.I know he’s very smart at all his classes ,so he won’t mind if I ever miss the next parent teacher conference.
