What's the ideal size for high school?

New student registration centers open

Still not registered for school for next week? Today, Sept. 1, the Department of Education opened registration centers for students who are new to New York City or otherwise don't have a school placement. The borough enrollment offices will be closed while the temporary registration centers are open from 8 a.m to 3 p.m. until Sept. 24 (closed on Labor Day and on Sept, 9-10 for Rosh Hashanah). There are centers in all boroughs for both general education and special education students.

The centers are primarily for high school students who are new or re-entering the school system and for middle school students who don't have a zoned school. Older students seeking an alternative transfer high school should contact schools and programs directly or go to a Referral Center for High School Alternatives for guidance. All new students needing a special education placement should go to one of the special education sites.

Advocates for Children has published a Q&A for families of students with disabilities.

Families of elementary school students who have a zoned school should register at the school beginning on the opening day, Sept. 8. Don't know your zoned school? Call 311.

Make sure to bring the needed documents, including of proof of residence, report card, and IEP, if needed, as well as your child to register.  Check the DOE's website for a list of what you'll need and for center locations. You should register in the borough where you live.

There are interpreters available at every site for non-English speakers.

Do you need to register your child? Let us know how it goes. Comment below.
