InsideSchools Review

Our review:

Opened in 2006, South Bronx Classical Charter School offers extra hours of math and reading, Latin instruction and character education. Children wear uniforms and are expected to meet strict codes of conduct.

Founded by Lester Long, a former investment banker and elementary school teacher, the school boasts excellent test results and high marks on the city’s report card. Children are in school longer hours and more days than regular New York City public schools, and after-school tutoring and activities are mandatory.

Children enjoy double the amount of art, music and gym classes, in addition to Latin instruction beginning in 3rd grade and a debate program in grades 4-5. Parent involvement is strongly encouraged.

The School of Performing Arts shares the building, which has a metal detector.

Admissions: A lottery is held in April. Priority is given to District 8 residents. (Lydie Raschka, web reports and DOE data, October 2013)
