The Downside
Low attendance
DreamYard Prep offers students the chance to study art, theater, music, and dance alongside their regular high school courses. In the younger grades, students explore all four arts and then choose one to focus on starting in 11th grade. They spend two 90-minute blocks each week on their chosen major and take part in arts exhibitions or performances every semester.
The tiny school provides strong support for students. Staff are trained to use Restorative Practices to address social-emotional challenges and conflict, and student leaders are also trained in these methods. Each student is paired with a staff advisor who checks in with them daily to ensure on-going support.
DreamYard Project, Inc. is a nonprofit organization focused on arts education. They provide the school with a full-time culture coordinator who helps organize events and supports community wellness. Additionally, New Settlement, another nonprofit, assists students with college readiness and applications, starting in 9th grade. Here-to-Here offers career-related experiences and internships for students. DreamYard and its partners offer paid internships to students
Most teachers would recommend the school to other families, according to the annual NYC School Survey. However, there is still room for improvement in the graduation rate for students with disabilities and overall attendance for all students.
The school opened in the Taft Educational campus in 2006. PSAL sports are campus-wide. (Lydie Raschka, web reports, December 2024)
