InsideSchools Review

Our review:

Dr. Richard Izquierdo Health & Science Charter School promises to train students to be certified as Emergency Medical Technicians. However, the school has significant problems with order and discipline.

A teacher was arrested in 2012 and charged with hitting a 12-year-old girl and sitting on her, according to news reports. Students complain of gang activity and fights in the school, and 20 percent say they don’t feel safe in class, according to the Learning Environment Survey. Some 70 percent of teachers say order and discipline are a problem. A review by the state found that students talked out of turn and did not complete assigned tasks.

There is friction between the principal and the staff: 60 percent of teachers responding to the survey said they mistrust the principal and called him a bad manager, according to the survey.

Founded with a 6th grade in 2010, the school will expand by one grade each year until it serves students in grades 6 through 12. The school is the brainchild of Dr. Richard Izquierdo, a pediatrician for over 40 years and founder of Urban Health Plan (UHP), a network of health centers providing medical services to the South Bronx and Queens.

The school shares a large building (the former home of IS 158, which was closed in 2007) Bronx Career and College Preparatory High School and Bronx Latin.

Admissions:  By lottery. Check the school's website for more information. (Clara Hemphill, news reports and DOE statistics, September 2012)
