InsideSchools Review

Our review:

The School for Inquiry and Social Justice, founded in 2004, is an orderly school with interesting projects, stable leadership and a good record of academic achievement. The school has consistently received top marks on the Department of Education Progress Reports.

One year, children took part in what their teachers called a "virtual archeological excavation" in a project that combined history, English, math and science. Children learned about ancient Rome and the ancient city of Pompeii that was destroyed by a volcanic eruption. They pretended they were archaeologists and dug through plastic bins filled with sand and artifacts. Students recorded the mass, volumes and densities of each object they uncovered and wrote essays about what they learned. [See YouTube videos about the project.]

Teachers give Founding Principal Andrea Cypys high marks, according to the Learning Environment Survey. They agree the school is orderly and most say they would recommend it to parents. Children say they feel safe in class, although they express some concerns about safety in the neighborhood. The school shares a building with JHS 123.

Admissions: Unscreened. Children who apply will be selected at random. (Clara Hemphill, web reports, October 2013)
