InsideSchools Review

Our review:

Bronx Studio School for Writers and Artists has a liberal-arts focus with an emphasis on reading, writing and the arts. Students may take part in the Young People's Chorus or take classes at Casita Maria, one of the oldest Hispanic community organizations in the city.

The school opened in 2004 in The Casita Maria Center for Arts and Education, spent some time on one floor of the now-closed PS 198, then moved with Casita Maria into a spacious building with science labs, a theater, a dance floor and art studios in 2009. Casita Maria helped Bronx Studio students obtain mentors at City Hall and funded a student trip to Spain.

Principal David Vazquez grew up in the neighborhood and previously taught at other schools in the area. He was a Cahn Fellow in 2010 at Teachers College, Columbia University. The fellowship recognizes outstanding principals and offers them opportunities for further study.

The Learning Environment Survey shows that teachers feel supported by Vasquez and trust him, and the school enjoys pretty good feedback regarding culture and tone. Staffers have worked hard to make improvements on academic performance since receiving a quality review in 2011-12.

Urban Assembly is a network of 21 college-prep schools in New York City. These are regular public schools, not charters, and each has internships and partnerships related to a theme. The network-wide graduation rate is higher than the citywide average but Bronx Studio is near the citywide average.

After school: Bronx Studio and its host, Casita Maria, provide homework help, arts, and recreation.

Admissions: The school is open to children in District 8. (Lydie Raschka, web reports and DOE data, November 2013)
