What’s Special

A focus on healthcare

The Downside

Some complaints of bullying

The Bronx High School for Medical Science is a small school for grades 6–12. Students focus on medical science, with opportunities to do research, shadow healthcare professionals, and earn college credits. The school has solid attendance and most teachers would recommend the school to other families, according to the NYC School Survey.

Grades 6 to 8 follow a modified middle school format: students stay in the same classroom while teachers travel to them. Students start learning about college in 6th grade. By 8th grade, most earn some high school credits. Middle school students may participate in an after-school program run by Aspira New York.

High schoolers conduct research with professionals and may take college courses at Lehman, Bronx Community, and Hostos Colleges. Most students complete some college-level work by graduation. Many also participate in internships, such as at Jewish Home Hospital, and they may take elective classes in art, theater and computer science.

The school opened in 2002 to provide a medical science program in the Bronx. It is part of the William H. Taft Educational Campus and added a middle school in 2005. High school sports teams are campus-wide. While most students say they feel safe in school, more than half report bullying on the NYC School Survey.

Admissions: The middle school has both screened and open admissions programs. The high school screens for course grades. A District 75 program provides specialized education for students with severe disabilities, offering tailored support and services. (Lydie Raschka, web reports, December 2024)
