The Downside

Discovery High School is a safe, well-run school that does a good job making sure kids graduate on time, even if they didn’t do well in middle school. It has had a history of success with students learning English, older teens behind in credits, and students with special needs, who make up more than one-quarter of the school population.

The school has strong ties with families, according to the school quality guide. Teachers meet every other week to discuss and support struggling students. In a recent year, the student suspension rate was zero.

Teachers seem happy, and most would recommend the school to other families. They meet frequently to plan lessons together. “This is a rigorous environment, and we all focus on making each other better,” said a teacher in the city’s Quality Review.

Teachers deliver lessons in different ways to keep kids interested, grouping them at tables so they can discuss topics, or pairing them up. Low-tech chart paper and high-tech document cameras help children understand concepts. In one class, they analyzed old documents and firsthand accounts to draw a conclusion about characterizing Martin Luther as a revolutionary or a heretic.

Parents are encouraged to be involved. The school touts the fact that during a recent school year they saw 100 percent attendance at parent-teacher conferences.

Discovery is one of five schools housed in the Walton Educational Complex, a clean and well-lit building. It is located on the second floor and shares the lunchroom, gym and auditorium. While students must go through metal detectors to enter the building, the school entrance times are staggered to cut down on lines.

The building is conveniently located next to Lehman College, where high-achievers take college classes. Students may earn their lifeguard certification in the building’s swimming pool. (Lydie Raschka, web reports, June 2018)
