InsideSchools Review

Our review:

Bronx Little School, also known at PS 691, has grown from about 100 students to more than 300 since it first opened in 1999.

The school, originally housed in the former Monroe High School, began as an alternative school patterned after the progressive Central Park East elementary school in East Harlem. But Janice Gordon, principal since 2005, has adopted more traditional practices. The school moved from Monroe and now shares a building with PS 531 and PS 536, two new schools which are replacing PS 102, which the Department of Education decided to close for poor performance.

Parents say the school is safe and welcoming, according to the Learning Environment Survey. However, there appears to be some friction between the administration and staff: one-quarter of the teachers responding to the survey claim the principal is a poor manager.

Admissions: Unzoned school. Children zoned for PS 102 get preference, but children from anywhere in the Bronx may apply. (Clara Hemphill, web reports, August 2013)
