The Downside

Below average attendance

As its name implies, Digital Arts and Cinema Technology High School offers students the chance to make their own documentary films and create digital artwork such as stop-motion animation and graphic novels.

Housed in a building shared with an elementary school, Success Academy Cobble Hill, and a 6-12 school, The Boerum Hill School for International Studies, Digital Arts has undergone big changes in the past few years.

Teachers say the school is more orderly and disciplined than it was. Students say they are learning a lot, according to school surveys. Principal Dawn Meconi, who has led the school since 2013, changed the name from the Brooklyn School for Global Studies to reflect the new focus on digital arts. The school’s middle school grades were phased out, and it now serves grade 9-12.

While the school seems to be on the upswing, it still has a way to go. Graduation and attendance rates, while improving, are still below average.  (Clara Hemphill, web reports, August 2018; photo from the school's website)
