What’s Special
Exposure to culinary and hospitality industries
The Downside
Limited elective classes
The High School of Hospitality Management (HSHM) prepares students to work in the hotel and commercial food industries. The school is supported by the National Academy Foundation, a not-for-profit organization that supports high schools that train students for careers in industries with strong growth and employment potential.
In addition to academic classes, students may take courses and participate in activities in culinary arts and hospitality. For example, they take field trips to businesses such as the Loews hotel properties. Students learn the basics of commercial food preparation in a large, onsite industrial kitchen and participate in competitions such as one run by CCAP (Careers through Culinary Arts Program); one HSHM student won full tuition to attend the International Culinary Center after graduation.
There are a few elective classes and less than half of the students say the school offers a wide enough variety of classes, activities and programs based on their responses to the annual NYC School Survey.
Students learn Italian. After-school activities include clubs, arts, an aquaponics/hydroponics program and PSAL sports.
The school shares the Park West complex with Facing History School, Manhattan Bridges High School, Food and Finance High School, Urban Assembly School of Design and Construction and PS 138 (a small school for severely disabled students). All schools in the building share use of the cafeterias, gyms, auditorium and library.
Students wear uniforms of black, gray, blue or burgundy tops, and black, gray or burgundy pants.
SPECIAL EDUCATION: The school has ICT (integrated co-teaching) classes. (Laura Zingmond, web reports, December 2018)
