InsideSchools Review

Our review:

Opened in 2011, Archer Elementary School seems to be off to a good start: Parents and teachers agree the school is a welcoming place with high expectations for children, according to the Learning Environment Survey. The school's lively website lists events and performances such as concerts and afterschool enrichment programs such as chess and cooking classes.

Principal Zak Haviland, a graduate of Williams College who previously taught special education in District 9, has assembled a faculty that includes teachers with many years teaching in the Bronx, graduates of Williams and Bank Street College of Education, and a staffer who brings his skills as a French chef to the classroom.

Archer Elementary, also known as PS 531, shares a building with PS 536 and Bronx Little School. It is housed in the PS 102 building. The Department of Education decided to close PS 102 for poor performance.

Admissions: Zoned neighborhood school. (Clara Hemphill, school website and DOE data, August 2013)
