InsideSchools Review

Our review:

Madiba Prep Middle School offers its students--called scholars here--a theme of science, math, technology, engineering and environmental studies. All scholars get double periods in core academic subjects including math, science and English, in addition to daily advisory sessions where they are encouraged to "talk about what matters most to them," according to school literature.

Students are expected to do community service, wear a uniform and attend a summer bridge program in July. They can expect to travel both nationally and internationally during their three years of middle school and weekly sessions exploring college and career.

Sharon Stephens, the founding school leader, [shown in photo on this page] comes from the Bedford Stuyvesant community and taught English at nearby Benjamin Banneker High School as well as at a Brooklyn YABC, an alternative program for older youth. She has a background in special education, was the early intervention specialist for a Children First network and worked at Harlem Children's Zone Promise Academy in Harlem.

Madiba Prep, opened in 2012, shares the building with PS 26 and FDA IV.

After school: Homework help. Boys and girls basketball teams, robotics, CHAMPS fitness and other clubs.

Admission: District 16. Priority to applicants who attend an information session or fair. (Pamela Wheaton, June 2012, compiled from web reports & school brochure)
