InsideSchools Review

Our review:

The Eagle Academy for Young Men of Harlem, opened in 2013 with a 6th grade class, is modeled after the original Eagle Academy in the Bronx.

The founders are betting that challenging academics, parent involvement, mentoring, an extended day and summer programs will help build boys’ character and prepare them for college. The school will eventually serve boys in grades 6-12.

Classes run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday Institute programs include workshops for parents, life-skills training and remedial services for students. Students wear uniforms, attend daily town hall meetings, and take part in athletics. All incoming 6th graders are required to attend a two-week summer program in August.

“Summer Bridge programs allow incoming new students to gain a foothold in the Eagle Academy model,” Founding Principal Mahaliel Bethea II said in a press release. “Mentoring brings exposure to positive professional male role models.”

The school shares the Percy Sutton Educational Complex with KAPPA IV and Mott Hall High School.

The school offers a transitional bilingual program in Spanish. Extracurricular offerings include drum line, runners club, step team, volunteer opportunities, and intramural sports.

Bethea, who has a masters degree from Pace University, was an instructional coach at the original Eagle Academy for Young Men in the Bronx. Born and raised in the Bronx, NY, he taught at the Urban Assembly Academy of History and Citizenship for Young Men (UAAHC) in the Bronx where he coached the Warrior Step Team. He also founded the UAAHC Abroad Program, which provided opportunities for students to travel to Costa Rica, Japan and Peru.

A number of strong teachers from the Bronx Eagle Academy joined  Bethea to staff the new school.
